Senior Master Sergeant (Air Force Ret.) Wilfred Gayle Hinze, United States Air Force, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, January 5, 2025. A devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriot, he proudly served his country for 29 years, completing several remote tours across Saudi Arabia and Asia. His dedication to service reflected his deep sense of duty, discipline, and his quiet strength.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia (Lee), who went to be with the Lord in June 2020; his parents, Wilfred August Hinze and Helen (Doll); his twin brother, Robert; and his younger brother, Paul.
Beyond his distinguished military career, he was a man of kindness and gentle spirit. He loved traveling, sharing time with his children and grandchildren, and never turned down a good family gathering or the opportunity to beat you in a game of chess.
He also had a playful side, especially when folding intricate origami creations out of dollar bills. A signature gesture he enjoyed leaving as tips when dining out. While it could be painfully awkward for his family, he was paying so the argument is moot.
He is survived by his six children: Lt. Colonel (Army Ret.) Wilfred Hinze (Letricia), Renae Turner (James), Daniel Hinze (Terri), Paul Hinze (Jennifer), Andrew Hinze (Tara), and Joanna Stotts (Anthony); several grandchildren; and many great grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of love, resilience, and quiet courage.
Those who knew him will remember a hardworking man who lived with honor and perhaps even more importantly, the gentlest soul they ever met.
Mr. Hinze is at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln where visitation will be on Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Mikado Cemetery, in the spring. Memorial donations are suggested to the Alcona County Commission on Aging, https://alconaseniors.org
