Philip Arthur Lince, 78, of East Tawas, died December 4, 2018 after a long battle with cancer, passing away peacefully under the care of Reverence Hospice. Phil was born October 6, 1940 to J. Alex and Gladys (Sharboneau) Lince in Laingsburg, Michigan and was raised in Alpena. Prior to graduating from Alpena High School in 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1958, and went active duty in August 1960. He was a Plank Owner of the U.S.S. MacDonough DLG-8, commissioned on November 6, 1961 in Boston, Massachusetts and was serving aboard the MacDonough in the fall of 1962 during the Naval Blockade of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon Honorable Discharge from active duty in August 1963 he remained in the Naval Reserves until 1965. After returning home to Harrisville he moved to Mt. Clemens to learn the tool and die trade and while there played semi-pro football for the Michigan Arrows. He returned to northern Michigan in 1969 and was one of the first journeyman tool and die makers hired by Bill Neinstedt in late 1970 at a new manufacturing facility in East Tawas, Starboard Industries, where he worked until his retirement. Phil married Kaye (Olson) on September 14, 1974, they shared 44 years of marriage making their home in East Tawas. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 8135 Barton City, formerly Alcona Post 6466, Harrisville; past member of Oscoda American Legion Post 0724; and past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2588, East Tawas. He is survived by his wife, Kaye; sisters MaryLou Markey of Ceylon, Minnesota and Joyce (Glenn) Long of Greenbush; brothers Joe of Gaines, Michigan and Don (Pat) of Ione, Washington; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and James. Cremation arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln and there will be a memorial/inurnment service at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Holly, Michigan next summer.
