Mildred F. LaForge

January 5, 1926 — October 16, 2015

Mildred (Breest) LaForge, formerly of Curran, passed away at Lincoln Haven on Friday October 16th. She was born in Detroit on 1-05-26 to Edwin & Dorothy F. Breest. She had one brother, Don, who proceeded her in death, as did her husband Lee. She married Lee LaForge in 1946 & went straight from being a city girl to the life of a farmers’ wife when they moved to Curran where they ran the family farm. That farm is now a centennial farm owned by her great niece Carla Brimm & husband Ray. Mildred & Lee also owned & operated a large poultry farm, providing farm fresh eggs to many area businesses & individuals over the years. Lee & Mildred were foster parents to countless youth, and many nieces & nephews worked on the farm during the summer months, haying, milking cows & gathering & “candling” eggs. Mildred enjoyed working at the Alcona County Courthouse in the MSU Co-op Extension office for over 20 years. She was very active in the Sunnyside United Methodist Church of Curran, playing piano, singing, Bible study, and was in charge of a knitted sweater program which provided many warm sweaters to refugee children. Mildred was an accomplished seamstress, sewing all her own clothes. She also belonged to the Alcona Historical Society and was an avid collector, creating unusual collections of many different items. Mildred is survived by adopted daughter, Connie LaForge, grandson Jeffrey LaForge, three nieces Gale Sarkella, Colleen Bayoff and Barbara Breest, sisters-in-law Jean DeJarlais, Florence LaForge, Delia Marsh and many nieces & nephews. The family is planning a memorial service for Mildred in the spring. Arrangements were made through Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln.
